The UK Barrett's Oesophagus Registry ("UKBOR")

The work of the Foundation was preceded by the establishment of the United Kingdom National Barrett's Oesophagus Registry in 1996. The Registry, a joint initiative between the Oesophageal Section of the British Society of Gastroenterology and the European Cancer Prevention Organisation, is the first of its kind in the world and the only national Barrett's registry in the World.

Currently, 42 hospitals across the country contribute to the Registry, which holds information relating to over 9,000 people diagnosed with Barrett's (list available on request). This provides essential information across a comprehensive cross section of patients, to enable in depth study of the factors influencing the change to cancer and the most effective forms of treatment to prevent cancer.

The scientific activities of the Registry are overseen by a Scientific Advisory Committee comprising medical trustees and members of the Oesophageal and Pathology Sections of the British Society of Gastroenterology. On a day-to-day basis, the Registry is staffed by a Registrar and intermittent part-time assistants who are supported by two honorary medical directors.
